Hong Kong Cellist Society is a non-profit & non-governmental organization founded in 2004, with the aim in promoting and arousing greater interest in the cello. Currently there are 1000+ active members in the society. Throughout the years, we have expanded our horizons to include a variety of instruments as well as different genres of music. We have on going instrument course for adult and junior. We have also organized concerts of different varieties. Our hope is to encourage our members to gain more awareness and appreciation for the classical music scene in Hong Kong.
Each year, we present a host of different music performances as well as the annual Maestro Cello Festival. Past concerts include: Guitar Fest 2010, Sibei Weng Flute Recital in Sep 2009, Black Chamber Ensemble 2008, Sarah Tsang Cello Recital 2008, Jeffrey Solow Cello Recital and Masterclass 2007. In 2009, the first Hong Kong Cello Festival was presented. The festival program consisted of a Cello Recital by Artem Konstantinov, a Richard Bamping Masterclass, a Cheung Pei Chien Masterclass and a Cello Factory Participant’s concert. In 2010, the annual Hong Kong Cello Festival is put together with a series of events including a Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra concert featuring Giovanni Sollima, a Giovanni Sollima Masterclass, and two Cello Factory Participants Concerts.
This year, HKCS is pleased to present a new program called the Young Musicians Performance Program (YMPP) in July. This program's aim is to help young musicians of high calibre start their performance career. We organize quality concerts and recitals for these young talents at different venues. In the past we have enjoyed a great relationship with the music society in China. We were invited to various events such as music exchange in different music organizations. Musicians nowadays experience much difficulty in getting acknowledgement for their talents. Those who chose music as their career often find themselves without any opportunities to perform. To evolve into a great performance artist, they need the chance to gain these valuable performing experiences. However, in our world, things tend to work in a more commercial sense. Often organizations will only seek out those who had already won some big competitions or someone who had already made a name for himself, thus those who are struggling will always be forgotten. This is why we hope to help these people of great potential to nurture and develop their professional performance career by giving them a chance to perform in an outstanding concert. We are honoured to have the sponsorship from Shui On Land, enabling us to bring great music to the city of Dalian, China, and at the same time, giving this year's YMPP Fellowship Recipient Wong Ka Lap a chance to share his music with the people of Dalian. It gave us great pleasure and excitement knowing we are sharing and communicating through music, bonding two cities closer, enriching the Arts and Music cultures to an ever-growing music lover population. We would like to continue and expand our great relationship together to further develop a cultural and music exchange between Hong Kong and China. We believe your audience would truly enjoy the type of outstanding concerts we are capable of producing.
Hong Kong Cellist Society’s commitment in spreading the love for music is exemplified by our continual efforts to bring more opportunities of music awareness to the masses. We aspire to provide music lovers with a channel to appreciate and enjoy greater exposure to music, whether you choose to play an instrument or purely for the pleasure in listening to music.
